House Paint vs 2K Paint Used on Aluminium Joinery Painting aluminium windows can help transform old, outdated, rundown, damaged frames and even introduce a new colour to your home’s exterior and give the entire vibe of your home or establishment a fresh look as if they’ve only just first come out of the factory itself.  When painted, it will not only look great and add value to your property but you’ll also be adding a protective layer that will make them last a good few years longer. Painting aluminium joinery requires a lot of skills in choosing the right paint to use in certain weather and surface condition but doing the prep right and choosing the right paint is essential to a good and lasting finish.  One tip we’d like to give our clients though, is to NOT USE paint that painters will normally use on painting a wall and use the same on aluminium windows as it simply won’t last as long and repainting it is just as hard and tedious work. Overtime, the ‘house paint’ will crack and is eventually going to be more costly when you decide to repaint it. House paints are thick and creamy. Cleaning it off can be very tedious and laborious process and can ultimately create costly damage on your budget. That’s why to avoid this mistake, we recommend leaving this job to the professionals who are highly trained in this field.   An example of this is the recent job we completed at St Helliers, the joinery has a house paint used on the aluminium sliding doors.  Maybe using it can be a temporary solution for some, but in the long run as it cracks and peels off (1st and 2nd photo), not to mention the uneven stoke of brush on them (3rd photo), repainting it will not be an easy job for anyone. To repaint it, the house paint used on the aluminium joinery has to be cleaned off first. And the removal process involves applying a chemical or acid that when applied to the paint surface it bubbles and loosens it. This will then be cleaned off by using a special cleaning agent that removes the residue on the surface. This process will have to be repeated until the house paint is fully removed. After a series of repeated stripping process, ensuring that no house paint residue was left on the joinery, then it can now proceed in the preparation of aluminium surface prior to the application of etch primer and top coats. See Our Process page to see detailed preparation process. For top coats, we use the 2k paints used for automotive. These are made to handle extreme condition and external elements. House and automotive paint have different compositions and shouldn’t be used interchangeably. That’s why for our top-coats, we use the 2k (two-pack) automotive paints. This is a two-component paint system in which the chemical reaction results in hardening of the paint. It is commonly used in industries such as automotive, marine, and aviation because of its superior durability and resistance to chemicals and abrasion but can also be used on residential applications like on metal joineries. This type of paint is: Corrosion resistant: It provides an air and watertight barrier that protects metal from oxidizing. High solid content: This means that the remaining materials, the pigments and binder, leave a thick film after the curing process. Durable: It is extremely resistant to abrasion, impact and wear and tear. Easy to maintain: It provides a smooth and completely sealed surface which makes it easy to clean and maintain. Strong adhesion: It has strong adhesion to applied substrate. Fast curing: It minimizes downtime since it usually cures after 24 hours compared to water-based paints or house paints that can take up to 4 weeks until it has fully cured. So, choosing the right paint plus an experienced and expert applicator in this field provides a good end result – more durable, long lasting, fine and even finish on the aluminium surface.
