Recolouring / Painting Anodised Aluminium Joinery People may wonder if anodised aluminium joinery can also be recoloured / repainted. if you are one of the many, the answer to this is – YES!  In layman’s term, anodised joinery is a ‘coloured joinery’ through electrolytic surface treatment which creates a hard, durable, corrosion-resistant, finish. However, overtime as it gets exposed to external elements and weathering its finish can diminish looking pale and dull, oxidation and corrosion may also be evident after many years of exposure to weather. And we get it, it’s a hard surface to paint as the process is not easy. There is no shortcutting the process in repainting anodised joinery, and you also cannot compromise the right material that you will use. Every step of the process has to be meticulously and precisely done. The preparatory work is much longer than a usual powder coated finish. And a specially formulated etch primer is used to ensure adhesion to the aluminium joinery prior to applying topcoats.  And just like any other alumimium surface we have painted we leave your joinery with a long-lasting finish that not only can withstand extreme weather condition and temperatures but also add many more years of life to it with a warranty that guarantees our work. Repaint vs Replace

Repainting vs Replacing Aluminium Joinery We understand the predicament homeowners are put into when it comes to spending their valuable money. And when it comes to deliberating if it’s a better option to replace old aluminium windows / doors versus repainting and restoring them, you can get caught in the middle of that dilemma. However, if we know what factors and benefits are involved in both options, then the decision becomes easier specially when you’re making an informed decision. Whether that decision is to go for an extra cost or for the more sustainable and cost-effective option. We would say replacing is a case-to-case basis and depends on some factors that are highly important to homeowners. And I guess the question you need to ask yourself is, do I want to replace my aluminium joinery for a bigger and wider frame and a total revamp of style and design? Is replacing them more cost effective on my budget? Is it more sustainable? What are the hassles involved in replacing them? i.e. removal of frames from the structure to replacement, gibing, the skirting, it’s water and air tightness and all other potential damage and hidden cost that may come from replacing them. Replacing your existing aluminium windows or aluminium doors should now be a secondary option because windows and doors restoration provides the best value of your money and time. Gone are the days where the misconception of most home or establishment owners is that you must replace aluminium joinery when you want them in a different colour or when you have an old aluminium joinery and its powder coat colour or anodised colour is looking pale, old, outdated, rundown or just doesn’t blend in if you are wanting a modernised look of your entire property.   We have had a previous client who initially decided all their windows to be replaced. These windows are built since 1979. Although half of them have been replaced already when we got on board, the project costs a lot more than the initial budget and had costs them stress and headache that they eventually decided to repaint the remaining windows instead saving them their valuable time and money! Aluminium is built to last. It is light, strong, corrosion-resistant and lasts for a lifetime. We know trends change but fortunately it can be remediated with a just a facelift to get them looking good as new! Restoring or maintaining your existing windows and doors doesn’t mean you’re stuck with it’s old, outdated, dull, rundown look and sometimes corroded surface. And the best thing about remediating existing powder coat or anodised aluminium colour is that you can have almost any colour you want across the many colour options available basically anything you fancy! And while you save a lot of costs in replacement, we ensure you have a durable aluminium joinery finish while we also ensure we keep the disruption to a minimum while the work is being completed. For an average house It only takes a few days to prep and repaint all the aluminium joinery but of course with the help of a specialised painter in this field – Vision Recolouring. House Paint vs 2K Paint

House Paint vs 2K Paint Used on Aluminium Joinery Painting aluminium windows can help transform old, outdated, rundown, damaged frames and even introduce a new colour to your home’s exterior and give the entire vibe of your home or establishment a fresh look as if they’ve only just first come out of the factory itself.  When painted, it will not only look great and add value to your property but you’ll also be adding a protective layer that will make them last a good few years longer. Painting aluminium joinery requires a lot of skills in choosing the right paint to use in certain weather and surface condition but doing the prep right and choosing the right paint is essential to a good and lasting finish.  One tip we’d like to give our clients though, is to NOT USE paint that painters will normally use on painting a wall and use the same on aluminium windows as it simply won’t last as long and repainting it is just as hard and tedious work. Overtime, the ‘house paint’ will crack and is eventually going to be more costly when you decide to repaint it. House paints are thick and creamy. Cleaning it off can be very tedious and laborious process and can ultimately create costly damage on your budget. That’s why to avoid this mistake, we recommend leaving this job to the professionals who are highly trained in this field.   An example of this is the recent job we completed at St Helliers, the joinery has a house paint used on the aluminium sliding doors.  Maybe using it can be a temporary solution for some, but in the long run as it cracks and peels off (1st and 2nd photo), not to mention the uneven stoke of brush on them (3rd photo), repainting it will not be an easy job for anyone. To repaint it, the house paint used on the aluminium joinery has to be cleaned off first. And the removal process involves applying a chemical or acid that when applied to the paint surface it bubbles and loosens it. This will then be cleaned off by using a special cleaning agent that removes the residue on the surface. This process will have to be repeated until the house paint is fully removed. After a series of repeated stripping process, ensuring that no house paint residue was left on the joinery, then it can now proceed in the preparation of aluminium surface prior to the application of etch primer and top coats. See Our Process page to see detailed preparation process. For top coats, we use the 2k paints used for automotive. These are made to handle extreme condition and external elements. House and automotive paint have different compositions and shouldn’t be used interchangeably. That’s why for our top-coats, we use the 2k (two-pack) automotive paints. This is a two-component paint system in which the chemical reaction results in hardening of the paint. It is commonly used in industries such as automotive, marine, and aviation because of its superior durability and resistance to chemicals and abrasion but can also be used on residential applications like on metal joineries. This type of paint is: Corrosion resistant: It provides an air and watertight barrier that protects metal from oxidizing. High solid content: This means that the remaining materials, the pigments and binder, leave a thick film after the curing process. Durable: It is extremely resistant to abrasion, impact and wear and tear. Easy to maintain: It provides a smooth and completely sealed surface which makes it easy to clean and maintain. Strong adhesion: It has strong adhesion to applied substrate. Fast curing: It minimizes downtime since it usually cures after 24 hours compared to water-based paints or house paints that can take up to 4 weeks until it has fully cured. So, choosing the right paint plus an experienced and expert applicator in this field provides a good end result – more durable, long lasting, fine and even finish on the aluminium surface.
